Title 1
Oakdale Elementary is a School-Wide Title I School
Title I is a federal program which provides funds to supplement educational services in schools with higher percentages of students receiving Free or Reduced Price Lunch assistance. The purpose of the program is to ensure that students in these schools have access to a high quality education.
Title I School-Wide Programs
Schools with Free-Reduced Price Lunch rates greater than 40% may apply to operate as school-wide programs (SWP). SWP schools design a school reform plan aimed at improving overall education, while still focusing on students at risk of not meeting standards. SWP status allows schools more flexibility in using Title I funds. For example, SWP staff funded by Title I dollars can work with any student in the school, where in a targeted assistance program, they are only allowed to work with students identified as at risk.
How Oakdale Uses Its Funding
· Four intervention teachers and 2 intervention EAs are paid partly or wholly out of Title I funding. These staff provide intervention services to students who have been identified through a variety of data to be in need of additional support in order to reach grade level standards.
· A 3rd grade math teacher and two 3rd grade EAs are paid for to support the high 3rd grade class size.
· Part of our Math Specialists’ contract is paid through Title I. First, she provides coaching to our teachers on instructional strategies in mathematics. In addition, she teachers standards-based lessons once every six days with our 2nd, 4th, and 5th graders. Teachers flexibly group students during these lessons.
· Part of our Literacy Specialists’ contract is paid through Title I. She provides coaching to our teachers on instructional strategies in reading and writing.
